Life

Francis was born to a rich Italian merchant and spent his youth in fine clothes and revelry. In his early twenties, following a period of illness and crisis, he underwent a profound conversion.

He publicly renounced his inheritance — literally stripping off his clothes in the town square — and dedicated the rest of his life to poverty, service, and preaching the beauty of creation.

He founded the Franciscan order, met with the Sultan during the Crusades in an effort at peace, and, according to tradition, preached to birds and befriended a wolf.
