Life
Kong Qiu — known to the West as Confucius — was born into a minor noble family in the state of Lu during a time of political disintegration. He spent his life trying, and largely failing, to persuade rulers to govern with virtue.
He held only minor offices. He wandered for over a decade seeking a ruler who would take his counsel. None did. He returned home and taught until his death.
His students recorded his sayings. That book, the Analects, became the moral spine of imperial China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan.
