Undefeated in over sixty duels, Musashi spent his final years alone in a cave writing a book on strategy that would outlast every one of his enemies.
Life
Musashi fought his first duel at thirteen. He fought his last around thirty. He was, by every account, undefeated.
He was also a painter, a calligrapher, a sculptor, and a philosopher. He is one of the very few historical figures who could plausibly claim mastery of both the sword and the brush.
In his final years he retreated to a cave called Reigandō and wrote The Book of Five Rings — a treatise on strategy so lucid it is now studied in business schools.
